Moonstruck Bernedoodles
The Mountain Dooodles!
Under Construction! Please check back :)
In addition to our Australian Bernedoodles (a Bernedoodle using an ALD instead of a poodle), Moonstruck Bernedoodles also offers an infusion of Australian Shepherd into our Bernedoodle mix which creates an "Aussie Mountian Doodle". We do this for several reasons:
1. Trainability: The Australian Shepherd is highly intelligent and very trainable. A "good" Aussie Shepherd is a phenomenal dog with exceptional qualities. The downside to Aussies? Well, when they are not "good" they suck. They have skittishy temperaments that lean toward fear-aggressive behaviors. There are unstable dogs in ALL breeds. That is why Moonstruck offers a 12 month Temperament Guarantee. We believe strongly that our breeding stock is sound of mind, which produces dogs that are also sound of mind. Temperament is a heritable trait. Breed weirdo dogs and you will get more of the same. Backing it up a bit; the other bonus to infusing some Aussie into our Bernedoodles is that it noticabley reduces the "stubbornness" Bernese characteristic. Even the best Bernese are obstinate little creatures. It's a strong breed trait. Our Aussie Mountain Doodles lean away from this characteristic.
2. Looks! Who doesn't want an attractive, eye catching and unique dog? A lot of people lean towards Bernedoodles not just for the family friendly temperament, but for the adorable factor. The colour genetics of the Australian Shepherd help promote some very unique looking dogs.
3. Coat and structure: Because our Aussie infusions come from Aussiedoodles (Australian Shepherd X Poodle), there is generally no more than around 1/4 Australian Shepherd in most of our Aussie Mountain Doodles. Most of our typical pairings result in offspring that have a heritage like the pictograph below. What this does is give us a wide range of coat-types from unfurnished to scruffy to super floofy. Not everyone is looking for the intense upkeep of a very 'doodley' coat. The unfurnished and the more scruffy furnished dogs have much lower grooming demands... but the trade off is a higher level of shedding (the dog pictured at the top of this page is furnished, but has week furnishings resulting in that adorable "Benji" scruff appearance).
Because we choose to keep the amount of Poodle in our Aussie Mountain Doodles low (generally the contributing amount of purebred Poodle is 25%), the squarer, blocker structure of the Bernese, ALD and the Australian Shepherd contribute to a blockier and less Poodly looking dog. There are some that do end up looking a bit more slight and Poodly than others (don't forget that there is a notable contribution of Poodle in an ALD), but overall, puppies lean toward a more relaxed coat (less curl) and a blocker 'teddy bear' build.
